About the GAA

The Georgia Arborist Association is a resource for tree owners and tree professionals.

Our Mission

To promote safe and proper arboriculture practices in the state of Georgia through networking, training, and public education; and to be a voice for the professional arborists who manage and care for Georgia’s trees.

The GAA has 968 members, 15 board members, and a database of 4000 tree care industry professionals. We drive enhancements in the arboriculture industry in Georgia by providing education, networking, and outreach opportunities. Becoming an ISA certified Arborist is the main vehicle we use to improve Arboriculture in our state.

A GAA History:

The roots of the Georgia Arborist Association (GAA) go back 50 years. In 1972 Hugh Tyer and several private tree care operators banded together to discuss their trade as part of the Atlanta Arborist Association. This group continued to meet for many years. In 1982 they started meeting at set locations on the second Tuesday of each odd month (this still stands today) and renamed themselves the Georgia Arborist Association as new members joined from Columbus and Macon, GA. In the early 90s Hugh Tyer joined the board of the ISA Southern Chapter, and later became their president, and the GAA started encouraging certification, holding tree climbing competitions, and training with continuing education from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). In 1996 the GAA started the Tree Climbing Competition annually, which continues to this day.

In 2006 a partnership with the Georgia Forestry Commission, an Urban and Community Forestry Grant was provided to fund an executive director for the GAA. As part of the grant, the GAA became incorporated through the Georgia Secretary of State in March 2006. The grant was approved and the GAA hired its first part-time executive director in 2007.  In 2009 the IRS granted the GAA 501 c(3) status. While the original grant ended in 2011, the GAA has sustained itself and paid for an executive director through memberships and programming since 2014.

Through an expansion in membership and a commitment to consistently delivering high-quality educational programs and outreach initiatives, the GAA achieved independent chapter status within the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) in 2022.

Today the GAA operates with one full time executive director, a part time administrative professional and a 15 seat board of directors. Through continued grant funding from the GFC, the organization will expand in 2024 by hiring a full time Outreach Coordinator. This position will use the CEJEST tool to expand the reach of the GAA to the underserved communities in Georgia. The Outreach Coordinator will actively enhance Spanish-language opportunities within our community, aligning with our commitment to fostering inclusivity and expanding the accessibility of educational initiatives.
