Approximately 82% of the US population lives in urban and suburban areas, environments which have several socio-economic and ecological stressors that can reduce human health and well-being and diminish ecosystem health. Urban trees help ameliorate many of the stressors urban areas face, for example by reducing air temperature and pollution, increasing health and well-being, reducing stormwater runoff, and providing numerous other ecosystem services. When urban trees receive quality growing conditions and experienced care, they can more easily achieve optimal health and growth, and as a result provide the greatest benefits back to urban areas. During this field-based workshop, participants will learn more about young tree pruning, tree establishment, tree health, and risk assessment. After meeting up at the Hall County Extension office in the morning, participants will depart to Midlands Park for a tree pruning demonstration and discussion of tree establishment and tree health while walking along the greenway to view several recently planted and established trees. Participants will then be transported to the Hall County School District headquarters in historic Gainesville for lunch and then an afternoon tree risk assessment discussion and activity.
This Spanish language academy is designed to help current tree climbers meet the qualifications and gain further understanding about technical tree climbing in order to take and pass the ISA Certified Tree Climber Specialist exam.

In recent years hurricanes and other extreme weather events have caused considerable damage to urban trees and managed forests in middle and southern Georgia. Historic downtown revitalization is taking place in many towns to attract economic development. With city revitalization efforts taking place, County Agents, tree care specialists, and green industry workers can help city planners select suitable tree species for appropriate sites and help train municipal workers on tree risk reduction and key maintenance to optimize tree health and longevity considering extreme weather events. Forest landowners and managers will benefit from presentations assessing damage levels in hurricane damaged stands, pine tree lean recovery guidelines, reforestation options post-Hurricane Helene, pest and pathogen issues, and invasive plant management pointers for hurricane damaged stands. This day-long workshop will encompass two main areas of emphasis, including (1) what we’ve learned from Hurricanes Irene and Michael on forest management and (2) urban tree considerations for storm-preparedness and recovery, with morning presentations at the Coffee County Extension office and afternoon field discussions at the South Georgia State College campus.
